Whitney Elizabeth Houston, born 9 August 1963, to the musically inclined family of Newark New Jersey is the daughter of gospel star Cissy Houston and John Russell Houston Jr. Also, she is the sister of the singer Dionne Warwick. In Newark Whitney, she began singing in the church choir in the early years of her childhood. At the age 15 she accompanied her mother singing background vocals on Chaka's smash Im Every Woman from 1978. Then, she performed backing vocals to Jermaine Jackson and Lou Rawls as well as her mom. The quality of her work as the lead vocalist in New York funk group Material was noticed by big record companies, like Arista who she was signed in 1982, and continued to work for the remainder of her career. Whitney Houston became the top-selling debut album for an artist in the year 1985. The film itself as well as the performances on screen were not widely appreciated, the album's soundtrack and her rendition of the Dolly Parton song I Will Always Love You was the top of charts for albums and singles for a period of time and sold over 44 million copies around the globe. The daughter of her mother Bobbi was born the month of March in 1993. This was the year after she wed Bobby Brown. Around this time, her well-documented substance abuse began and by 1996, Bobbi Kristina Brown had been using drugs on a daily basis.
