Queen Latifah

Dana Elaine Owens, better known as Queen Latifah in the US, is a performer and actress. Queen Latifah's performance in the fields of music, film and television has been recognized with the Golden Globe award two Screen Actors Guild Awards two Image Awards a Grammy Award six additional Grammy nominations an Emmy Award nomination and an Academy Award nomination. Queen Latifah is an Newark New Jersey native. Her parents are Lancelot Sr. as a police officer as well as Rita who was a educator in Irvington High School. The couple divorced at the time Latifah was ten years old. Latifah was born and was raised in Newark New Jersey attended Catholic school in Newark. Latifah is an Arabic word that means "delicate and kind". Her aunt granted it to her when she was eight. Latifah is 5-foot-10" tall power forward for the team at her high school, was always tall. She sang "Home" from The Wiz during a play in her high school. Latifah was a member of Ladies Fresh, a rap group which launched her career in beatboxing. Latifah became part of with the Flavor Unit in its original form, which consisted of an MC team with producer DJ Mark The 45 King. Mark James (aka DJ Mark the 45King) recorded a demo for Queen Latifah her rap Princess of the Posse. The song was recorded and given to Yo! MTV Raps, Freddy. The track caught the attention from Tommy Boy Music employee Dante Ross who signed Latifah and released her debut single Wrath of My Madness.
